Project Overview

The Dedham-Westwood Water District’s contractor, Gravity Construction Inc., started water main construction on Riverside Drive the week of July 20.

The work limits for the project include Riverside Drive between Vine Rock Street and Bridge Street, and a portion of Bridge Street between VFW Parkway/Rt.1 and Needham Street. Work will consist of:

  • Removing and replacing approximately 4,200 linear feet of 6-inch cast-iron water main with new 8-inch ductile iron pipe 
  • Installing the District-owned portion of each property’s water service line (properties located within the above project limits)
  • Installing fire hydrants, valves, and associated appurtenances 


The project will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be on Riverside Drive between Bridge Street and the far end of East Riverside Drive, and the second phase will be between the far end of East Riverside Drive and Vine Rock Street.

While water main construction occurs, a temporary above-ground water main will supply customers with water.

Anticipated Impacts

While construction is underway, access to through traffic will be limited. However, residents, emergency vehicles, and school buses will always be allowed to pass through. The road will be open to normal traffic conditions once construction has finished for the day.

At times, residents will have their water service temporarily disrupted. The District will notify affected residents 24 hours before any planned water disruptions. Sudden water disruptions are unplanned emergencies, and unfortunately, the District cannot notify customers in advance.

Residents are strongly encouraged to sign up for project email updates. The District will send routine communications weekly and, when feasible, emergency notifications.

Construction Update

Summary of Completed Construction Activities, August 10-14, 2026:

  • Connected all properties in the project’s first phase to the temporary water main.


Anticipated Construction Schedule for the Week of August 17-21, 2026:
Please Note: All construction activities are anticipated and may be changed due to weather or in-the-field changes.

  • Monday, August 17: On Monday, the contractor will mobilize and begin work at 5 a.m. to install a small section of water main on Needham Street.
    While work is underway on Needham Street, traffic from Rt. 1/West Roxbury will be detoured to Pine Street.
    Traffic from the Vine Rock/Needham Street roundabout will be able to access Needham Street fully. We anticipate being out of this intersection before the morning rush.

    For the remainder of the day, water main installation will occur on Riverside Drive near the businesses. Riverside Drive between Needham Street and Valley Road will be open to residents only.

    Monday’s work hours are from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please be mindful that parking will be restricted on Riverside Drive near the business area and park.

  • Tuesday-Friday, August 18-21: Water main installation will continue. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
